HOUSTON - - UT Arlington pole vaulter Wade Hayes captured a Southland Conference championship with a vault of 16 feet, 8.75 inches in the first day of competition Friday in the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field meet. Hayes helped the 2007 outdoor champion Mavericks finish Day 1 in fifth place indoor with 24 points, 16 points behind leader Stephen F. Austin.
Patrick Kimbley finished third in the long jump with a leap of 22-0.75, and Andrew Duncan picked up a fourth-place finish in the high jump by clearing 6-9.
Heading in the second day of competition today, the UT Arlington women are in seventh place with 12 points. Stephen F. Austin leads with 50. Angela Gonzalez turned in the top performance on Day 1 for the women with a third-place finish and leap of 18-9.75 in the long jump.
The Mavericks have set themselves up for a run at the team championships by running well in the preliminaries on Friday.
In the 800 meters, Ozie Hood turned in the fastest qualifying time in that event with a time of 1:55.92. Hood is one of three Mavericks who made the finals in the 800. UTA's men have two runners in the 400 finals, two in the 200 and two in the 60.
UTA's women stand to gain some ground in the 800 as well.
Helga Hardardotter had the fastest qualifying time with a 2:19.11. She is one of four UTA runners - along with Carranda Mose, Perri Ford and Esther Abuto - who will compete in the 10-person field.
Competition continues Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the men's heptathlon. The SLC will crown champions after the men's 400-meter relay scheduled for 4:35 p.m.
