SAN MARCOS, Texas - - UT Arlington's baseball team allowed eight runs in the final two innings and dropped a 10-9 decision against Texas State in a Southland Conference game Friday in San Marcos.
The victory evened the series for Texas State with Game 3 scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.
UTA (7-14, 2-3 in the SLC) scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-2 lead. But the Bobcats (11-7, 3-2) responded with two in the eighth before mounting the comeback in the bottom of the ninth. A Ben Theriot single with the bases loaded provided the winning run for Texas State.
The comeback wasted a stellar day at the plate for Maverick outfielder Matt Otteman and catcher Mitch Putman. Otteman went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Putman went 3-for-3 with a double, homer and three RBI. He also walked twice.
Putman's double down the left-field line in the seventh capped a five-run inning that put the Mavericks up 8-2.
UTA starter Nathan Long pitched seven innings, allowed 10 hits but only two earned runs before giving way to the Mavericks bullpen. UTA's relief crew was hurt by errors as only one of the final six runs allowed was earned.
Marcus Limon (0-4) took the loss for UTA.
Brandon Gaviglio (1-0) got the win for Texas State for pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
