SAN MARCOS, Texas - - UT Arlington freshman Chad Comer hit a solo homer in the 10th inning, and Andy Sauter shut the door in the bottom of the inning as UTA defeated Texas State, 6-5, in a Southland Conference baseball game Thursday night in San Marcos.
Comer's blast helped the Mavericks (7-13, 2-2) even their record in SLC action during the young conference season. UTA and Texas State (10-7, 2-2) resume the series with Game 2 on Friday at 2 p.m.
UTA took a 5-2 lead into the seventh inning before the Bobcats began their comeback. Texas State scored two runs in the seventh and one in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, 5-5, and help send it into extra innings.
After the Comer blast, UT Arlington asked starter Andy Sauter to close the deal.
Sauter got a strikeout, a groundout and a strikeout to end the game.
David McCleod and Matthew Otteman, hitting in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, in the batting order, collected three hits each and drove in a combined three runs.
UTA pitcher Jeff Edlefsen (1-0), earned the victory by pitching a solid 1 1/3 innings. Edlefsen relieved starter Ryan Robinson in the seventh and allowed just two hits and no runs.
The Mavericks and Bobcats play at 2 p.m. today in Game 2 of the three-game series.
